Live aquatic plants come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors, making them an excellent candidate for decorating your aquarium. You can place tall plants in the back, create a lawn look, or just make your aquarium look like an underwater forest. Additionally, live plants help keep the water clean y absorbing your betta's waste. And by absorbing your betta's waste, plants help prevent algae from growing by taking away those extra nutrients.
Live plants also create a natural looking aquarium, which helps your betta feel a lot more comfortable. Plants create hiding spots for your betta to escape to when he or she feels stressed. They also act as a type of stimulation, meaning your betta can swim through, under, over, and around the plants whenever he or she is bored. Not only is this great exercise for your betta, but it makes watching the aquarium much more enjoyable with an active and curious fish.
However, there are some negative aspects about having live plants. The main one is that like all living organisms, live plants need care. Some plants need high levels of light while others need very little amounts of light. Some plants thrive in high pH, while others do best in low pH. Additionally, when using live plants, sometimes nothing goes the way it was originally planned. One plant may grow too fast and outgrow the aquarium, while another may not grow at all. It takes lots of planning and research in order to achieve a professional looking tank. And if the plants do die, they decompose and contribute to the algea problem.
Another bad thing about live plants is that they can cost a lot of money. Just one plant can cost $10 and for a whole tank, the price could easily go over $50. For smaller aquariums, the price for buying plants would probably be only $20. However, $20 is a handsome investment if the end products look like these. Plus, you can always sell any extra plants you happen to grow to make up that money.
